How to extract the audio from a YouTube video into iTunes

  • Use Firefox with "Download Helper" add-on installed

  • Go to the page with the video on it
  • Use "Download Helper" to save the file in "medium" size and mp4 format

  • Once it's downloaded, open it using VLC (I used version 2.0.8)
  • In VLC, choose File->Stream->Transcode file
  • Choose only the audio to transcode (ie: not the video) and choose "uncompressed, integer"
  • Choose WAV for encapsulation (there's no other choice)
  • Select the location (I usually use the same location as the original with the .wav extension)
  • Once it's done, open iTunes and add the .wav file to your library
  • It will convert it to iTunes format.
