When I took my car into the dealer the other day, they offered to fill my tires with nitrogen for $20.
I had never heard of it before and my first reaction was that it was a scam, kind of like offering to top up the halogen in your headlights.
So I did a little research and apparently there are some benefits to filling your tires with nitrogen. However, unless you're a professional race car driver, the benefits are fairly minimal for the average Joe.
The basic idea is that nitrogen doesn't expand and compress as much as air so your tires aren't as affected by changes in temperature. It also reduces the likelihood that you have moisture trapped inside your tires which could potentially rust out your rims.
However, keep in mind, that air is 78% nitrogen already, so the benefits of replacing the 22% of non-nitrogen with nitrogen is not that significant.
Anyone else have any experience with this?
