Google Drive can act as a free web server

Recently Google has made some changes so that you can access the content on your Google Drive as if it were a web page.

This is what you have to do to get it to work:

  • Create a folder on your Google Drive that will be the root of your web page.  Something like "public_html"
  • Share the folder by setting its permission to "public on the web"
  • View the properties of the folder and you'll see the "link to share" which looks something like this:  https://docs.google.com/folder/d/0B3hnH7lQI5_0N3V5RnljR1QyM0E/edit
  • The long string of numbers and letters is your webViewLink
  • You can access your public folder by going to: https://googledrive.com/host/0B3hnH7lQI5_0N3V5RnljR1QyM0E
  • If you have any files in your public folder, they will be displayed as a list of files
  • However, if you put a file in the folder called "index.html" and this file contains valid HTML code, then it will display as a web site
Enjoy!
